  1. Was this originally supposed to be in an h-manga monthly magazine? I don’t see the point of making the female protagonist such an unabashed copy of Haruka Morishima from Amagami unless it was supposed to be a non-doujinshi work in the first place that got bumped into a submission for C85.

Anyway, I was hoping that this artist would have put his/her nice art style towards more Sword Art Online doujinshi titles. I guess s/he’s already moved on.

    • No, it’s an original work. Authors publish original pieces during Comiket too: they make more money directly then having it trickle down to them from their publishers if they run in H magazines.

And I see what you mean in terms of character design similarities, but I think it’s a bit harsh assuming Risa is just a knock-off of Haruka for her looks alone. That’s like saying every girl with black hair and a hime cut is a rip-off of Tsukasa/Mio/Sera, etc.etc.

      • By Sera, did you mean “Seraphim” from Kore wa Zombie desu ka?. She’s the only “Sera” I can think of in terms of anime characters, and she doesn’t have a hime cut like Mio Akiyama of K-ON! did.

Anyway, Risa in this story was “dating down” just like Haruka did in her arc of Amagami. Risa has a weakness towards dogs (the “puppy dog eyes” bit), just like Haruka of Amagami did. Risa asks the protagonist to “prove himself,” similar to what Haruka asked for in the second episode of Amagami SS. The fact that she’s a candidate for the Student Council President position mirrors a few other roles Haruka’s seiyuu, Shizuka Itou, had earlier, such as Hinagiku Katsura from Hayate no Gotoku! and Hisa Takei from Saki (both of whom were Student Council Presidents from their own respective series).

These “totally-not-another-character” bits show up in professional anime works too. I don’t know if you saw the Walkure Romanze anime series, but the character of Lisa Eostole there is clearly an “Expy” of Sora Kasugano from Yosuga no Sora, with the same hairstyle/body type, “kuudere” demeanour, right down to the same voice actress being used for both. Sometimes artists get so enamoured of a specific character they just produce their own versions. It’s easier than reinventing the wheel, after all.

        • tl;dr every anime character is an expy of another anime character who is an expy of another anime character ^ ad infinitum

          • I was just thinking that Risa’s resemblance to Haruka might have been the reason your group chose to translate this doujin, that’s all.

Anyway, a number of nicely-drawn Amagami have recently surfaced, such as those from artists like Hiromine Itou and Serizawa. Would you be interested in translating those?
